How To Prevent Common Car Problems

Posted By in Maintenance Tips | No Comments »

Life sure would be nice without having to deal with car issues, but then again, it’s never wise to assume our automobiles are immune from damage. Like anything, if you treat your car or truck right, it will give you thousands of worry-free miles. The reverse of the coin is also true; owners that neglect their vehicles are only asking for trouble.

Common Car Problems

You might get away with skipping an overdue oil change or two, but skimping on preventative maintenance only ends up coming back to get you in the end. That is why the key focus of this blog is prevention; the trusted professionals at Service Plus urge you to be a more proactive driver.

Your Car Deserves to be Treated Right

You’ll be rewarded with a longer vehicle lifespan and fewer repairs (especially unexpected ones) between maintenance intervals. Modern cars are built to last far longer than their automobile ancestors.

Whereas it was rare to clear the 100,000 mark on the odometer in the 70’s and 80’s, with proper care yours can easily surpass 250,000 miles. Some of the most well-maintained vehicles are fully capable of getting north of 300,000 with engine performance that’s comparable to when it first came out of the factory.

Auto Problem Prevention 101

Be relentless about checking your car’s fluids and the pressure in its tires. Oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and brake fluid are the lifeblood of your vehicle, and as such need to be inspected and topped off on a routine basis.

Replacement intervals should also be strictly adhered to; use synthetic blends for your oil and tranny fluid, as these products contain a wealth of materials designed to protect and preserve your motor’s critical parts from increased wear and tear. These cost a little bit more than conventional blends, but deliver benefits that far surpass the additional investment.

In reality, the extended intervals provided by synthetic fluids offset the cost of frequent replacements; you can easily go 10,000 miles between changes with premium oil blends vs. 3,000 for standard. While you’re at it, go ahead and invest in a permanent air filter (K&N is one of the top brands out there), as this will keep your engine breathing cleaning oxygen through its intake.

Another simple mistake that can rob you of precious MPG and potentially put your gas tank in harm’s way is not securing the gas cap after pumping at the station. In the same vein, be sure to keep your coolant reservoir full of a 50/50, water/antifreeze solution; overheating can quickly turn your engine into a heavy paperweight. Once the pistons and head gaskets go, there’s no going back, folks!
