How Often Should I Replace My Windshield Wipers?

Posted By in Maintenance Tips | No Comments »

Windshield wipers are gadgets that perform a sweeping motion that keeps water and other debris off of the windshield of a vehicle. The windshield wipers are connected to a small electric motor that allows them to conduct movement. Inside the motor is an electrical circuit that senses when the windshield wipers are to move after you have turned them on from inside the car. Most vehicles have this feature on their steering wheel or steering column.

Replacing Windshield Wipers

There are several reasons why windshield wipers might stop working effectively and when this happens, damage could be done to the windshield. Scratches and the lack of effectiveness to rid off water and debris on the windshield can occur when the windshield wipers need to be replaced.

When Windshield Wipers Should Be Replaced

  • Streaking and lack of cleanliness on the windshield
  • When the rubber on the windshield wiper appears to be damaged or gone
  • The wipers make strange noises such as squeaking
  • There is noticeable damage on the ends of the wipers

Any of the above matters could mean that the windshield wipers are in need of replacement. When they aren’t performing their job properly or proficiently, new wipers might be in order.

How Often Should Windshield Wipers Be Replaced?

Windshield wipers should be replaced every six to 12 months. Unfortunately, many people aren’t sure of the normal time between changing out windshield wipers, which could cause damage to the vehicle. Irreversible scratches can be etched into the glass of the windshield when the wipers are too old and worn.

Those that live in snowier or dustier regions should replace their windshield wipers more often. Deserts and mountainous areas tend to cause wipers damage at a quicker rate than flatter, drier, warmer regions do. Replacing the wipers right before winter is always best for those who go through snowy winter months with below freezing temperatures.

When you take your vehicle in for normal repair or maintenance, many places will offer windshield wipers for the vehicle if the technicians notice the health of the wipers.

The cost of wipers varies depending on the type of vehicle as well as the quality of the wipers being purchased. Some windshield wipers are specially designed to handle rough weather conditions. Decide what windshield wipers might be best for the vehicle and have them replaced as soon as any damage is noticed.
