Fluids that Will Keep Your Car Running Smoothly

Posted By in Maintenance Tips | No Comments »

There are many different factors that contribute to keeping your car running smoothly, and automotive fluids are near the top of the list. Below is a list of fluids that you should have topped up at all times. If you’re unable to check them yourself, make sure you take the vehicle in for regularly scheduled maintenance so your car can remain in its best condition possible.

Automotive Fluids

Engine Oil

One of the first maintenance chores that many drivers learn is how to check and add engine oil. Having your engine oil topped up helps your engine run smoothly because it reduces friction and keeps the engine from overheating. The lubrication factor can also prevent the formation of rust in the engine.

Transmission Fluid

Another important fluid for your vehicle is transmission fluid. This fluid works in a similar fashion to engine oil because it helps to lubricate and cool, keeping the gears moving without excess friction. Transmission fluid is red, which helps distinguish it from the golden-coloured engine oil.

Brake Fluid

Some people don’t even know that brakes have fluid, but without it, there would be no force to activate your brakes and you’d be in for a lot of trouble! If you’re ever in a situation where the brakes don’t feel quite right, check your brake fluid at the first opportunity and top it up accordingly.

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid makes it much easier to steer your vehicle. You’ll know if it is low because there will be resistance when you try to move the wheel. If that happens, get under the hood and check your level so you can top it up if necessary.

Coolant

Engine coolant is technically a fluid, and it is important to protect your engine from different temperature extremes. Make sure you don’t check your coolant levels when the vehicle is running or still warm because the result could be misleading.

Washer Fluid

Washer fluid combines a few different chemicals that help to break down the various debris that gets stuck to your windshield. Your washer fluid isn’t really required to keep your car running smoothly, but it definitely makes the trip more enjoyable and safer, as seeing out of the windshield is essential to a harmless drive. Some companies have come out with greener versions of washer fluid that will do the same thing without using the same harmful chemicals.
