Basic DIY Car Care

Posted By in Maintenance Tips | No Comments »

Taking good care of your car can be a pretty big responsibility, but it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. If you take a little bit of time every week to give your car a little love, you’ll be able to reap the benefits of a clean a beautiful vehicle without really noticing the work you put into it.

DIY Car Care Tips

Here are some pointers on how to care for your car so you can prevent problems that can lead to major work needing to be done:

First things first – prevent any damage so you don’t have to pay to get it fixed. Take the time to polish your headlights to keep them bright. If you take good care of them, you won’t have to replace the plastic coverings for years to come.

Keep your windshield wipers in top condition by wiping them down with paper towel and a little dish soap. Get into the habit of cleaning them off every time to stop to fill up on gas and you’ll get a few extra months of usage out of them.

Stain Removal

Keep an effective spray-on stain removal in your car at all times just in case you have an accident. Coffee, soda, ketchup, and oil are all very easy to spill and can stain for years to come.

The sooner you treat the mess, the more likely you are to remove it successfully. This will prevent you from having to recover your seats and will increase the resale value of your car. Remember to blot (not rub) the stain and to use cold water instead of hot, which can help to spread the stain.

Wash and Wax

A nice wash and wax is the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon. The only things you have to pay for are the cloths (microfiber works best) and the wax. Plus, it’s a good excuse to spend time with friends or family you’ve been meaning to catch up with! Treating your car to a mini-makeover not only helps it to look its best, but it also prevents paint chipping and flaking to keep your car value as high as possible.

Finally, when in doubt, Google it! Before you bring your car in to see the mechanic, look your problem up on Google. Chances are pretty good you’re not the first person to encounter this problem and someone has found a way to solve it without having to take it in. Having said that, if you think the solution is too tricky, it probably is. There are professionals for a reason!
