You wouldn’t think there was a right or wrong way to give your car a bath, but there are ways that will give you better results. Wash your car the right way by knowing these facts:

Washing Your Vehicle The Right Way

  1. Avoid sponges
Because they have a flat surface they, will leave marks after your car is dry. Leave the sponges for the sinks, and pick up a wash mitt instead. They’re easier on your paint.
  2. One bucket isn’t enough
One pail should be used for washing, and the other for rinsing all that grit and dirt off your wash mitt.
  3. Leave the dish soap for the dishes
Use a specially formulated soap made for washing vehicles; any other kind of soap will strip the wax from your car.
  4. Sunshine is not your friend
Washing a car in direct sunlight will obviously make it dry quicker, but it will also make water spots will appear faster. These are the kind of spots that can’t be buffed out; you’ll have to rewash your vehicle to get rid of them.
  5. Make sure to wax it up
Many people skip this step, but giving your vehicle a good wax job will not only make it shine, but protect the paint too.
  6. Use a towel to dry
Using a terrycloth towel will eliminate any unsightly water marks you get by leaving it to dry on its own.
  7. Clean the wheel wells
Debris and mud collects under the wheel arches, so it’s important to get up in there and give it a good scrub.
  8. Use different cloths
Never use the same cloth you dry with to wax with. Use a fresh cloth when the one you’re using gets dirty.
  9. More is not better
Instead of applying product directly onto the car, apply it to a cloth instead. You’ll eliminate streaking.
  10. Don’t roll down wet windows
You’ve finished the rest of the car and your windows are still kind of wet. Resist rolling them down, as this will make them streaky.
  11. Clean from the top down
Start at the top and finish at the bottom. The body of the car should be washed first, starting with the roof. Clean the wheels when everything else has been washed.
