Electrical Services and Repairs – Alternator and Battery

When your alternator or batter has a problem, your whole car has a problem. Without these crucial devices, hardly anything in your car will work properly. A completely dead battery means you can’t even turn on the headlights or the radio.

In most cases, mechanics can find affordable solutions to these problems. First, they have to diagnose the issue. That lets them know what they can and cannot do to get your car running, again.

Common Alternator Problems

Your car’s alternator turns mechanical energy into electrical engine that keeps the battery powered. Without the alternator, your battery would die quickly. When a vehicle stops running for no obvious reason, mechanics often inspect the alternator before looking at more difficult problems that could cost more to repair.

Some common symptoms of a damaged alternator include:

  • Dimmed headlights (or extremely bright headlights)
  • Growling under the car’s hood
  • Flickering lights on the instrument panel
  • Slow power windows
  • Non-functioning speedometer

Mechanics test the alternator by measuring its electrical output. Most of them create 13 to 14.5 volts of power.

If the alternator doesn’t meet this goal, then the mechanic will likely need to replace it. It’s a straightforward job that any trained mechanic can do. To get the best diagnosis and service, though, you should choose an experienced team of mechanics.

Common Battery Problems

Batteries can experience diverse problems that require their own solutions. Some symptoms of battery problems include:

  • A sulfur or rotten egg smell
  • Buildup on battery terminals
  • Stains
  • Corroded areas

Mechanics typically replace batteries when they leak. Leaking can cause stains, corrosion, and odor. They will also replace batteries that are older than three or four years. Today’s batteries work remarkably well, but they do have limited lifespans. After four years, it’s time for a new one.

Mechanics can fix corroded terminals quickly and easily. In most cases, they just need to clean the terminals with baking soda and water. A steel brush makes the job even easier. If the battery is old, though, your mechanic might recommend a replacement. The corrosion will likely return soon if the battery isn’t hobbled by another problem sooner.

Electrical services and repairs can keep cars on the road for decades. Make sure you have a trained, experienced mechanic inspect the system regularly so you won’t get stranded on the side of the road with a car that won’t start.
